Herbert Hernandez: A Triple-Threat Performer and Where He Stands Today

Herbert Hernandez, GIGIL Co-Founder and Award-Winning Musician Squeezes Achievement From His Creative Endeavors - Global Brands Magazine

In the early 2000s, the alternative rock/pop band 6cyclemind quickly rose to fame in the Philippines, achieving near-instant success. After nearly a decade of recording and touring, the band underwent lineup changes, welcoming the already-renowned lead guitarist, Herbert Hernandez. Before joining 6cyclemind, Hernandez had founded Moonstar88, where he continues to serve as lead guitarist and songwriter. Juggling two mainstream bands would be demanding for anyone, but Hernandez embraces the challenge with ease. Surprisingly, his music career isn’t his only pursuit—he also co-founded GIGIL, an internationally recognized independent advertising agency, with his partner Badong Abesamis.

By day, Hernandez navigates meetings, presentations, and collaborations with advertising clients worldwide, showcasing his talent in the visual arts. By night, he transitions into a rock star, performing with Moonstar88 or 6cyclemind. His ability to excel in both creative industries reflects his passion for pursuing ventures that inspire him.

A Day in the Life of Herbert Hernandez

Hernandez’s daily routine begins with a prayer and a generous dose of coffee. His 9-to-6 hours are dedicated to GIGIL, where he connects with clients and oversees projects, often breaking for lunch with his family. Married for 15 years, Hernandez and his wife share three children, and he prioritizes quality time with them daily. His kids occasionally join him at the office, giving them a glimpse into his professional life. Evenings are typically reserved for family dinners, followed by performances with his bands. Before bed, he unwinds by playing Mobile Legends with his wife.

He also makes time for weekly date nights, family days, and annual international vacations. Health and wellness are emphasized through family bike rides and shared activities.

With such a packed schedule, Hernandez sacrifices sleep, often surviving on just four hours a night. However, his passion for both careers fuels him, and the support from fans and clients keeps him motivated.

Supporting Fellow Creatives

Beyond his dual careers in advertising and music, Hernandez is dedicated to uplifting others in his fields. In 2018, he launched The Indierectory, a platform connecting freelance advertising professionals with agencies and companies. By bridging Filipino independent talent with paid opportunities, he aims to expand their reach globally.

In 2010, Hernandez also initiated Lakihan mo Logo (“Make the Logo Bigger”), a concert series showcasing bands formed by Manila-based advertising professionals. This initiative provides a stress-relieving outlet for ad industry creatives. Reflecting on his own struggles balancing music and advertising, Hernandez created a space where others could pursue their passions. Over the years, Lakihan mo Logo has hosted 58 concerts, with some participants even securing recording deals. Additionally, Hernandez organized 12 “Rockovery” concerts to fundraise for critically ill advertising colleagues.

What Lies Ahead for Herbert Hernandez

Now at 40, Hernandez envisions retiring in the next 15 years. Known for being “tireless,” “always switched on,” and “committed to doing great work,” it’s hard to imagine him stepping away from his many roles. His expertise in time management and prioritization ensures that fans can look forward to more groundbreaking ad campaigns and unforgettable music.

Whether you recognize Herbert Hernandez as the guitarist of 6cyclemind, the creative force behind Moonstar88, or the co-founder of GIGIL, one thing is clear: he dedicates himself fully to excelling in every role he takes on.
